When we talk about intimate apparel, there's often a whispered subtext - a question lingering, sometimes unsaid but almost always implied: Who are you wearing it for?
It’s this undercurrent that has, for far too long, steered the narrative around lingerie. The emphasis, historically, has been on the observer, not the wearer. But the tides are changing, and it's high time they did.
The real question we should be asking when it comes to intimate wear is: How does it make YOU feel?
Lingerie, at its core, is about intimacy, vulnerability, and personal strength. It's a garment that stays close, touches our skin, and becomes a part of us.
So, why have we spent so many years concerning ourselves with the onlookers when the true magic lies in the personal relationship we have with these delicate pieces?
For many of us, especially in the plus-size community, lingerie hasn't always been synonymous with empowerment. The industry didn’t cater to us, and the options available either lacked style or screamed functionality. However, we are at a significant juncture now — a moment of redefinition and reclaiming.
Brands and designers are finally recognising that lingerie is about the individual. It’s about how a lacy bralette makes you stand a little taller, or the quiet confidence a matching set can instill as you go about your day.
The new narrative, as I see it, is rooted in self-affirmation. It's about selecting pieces that speak to your soul, that honour your body, and that make you feel, for lack of a better term, unapologetically fierce.
Lingerie should be a celebration of oneself, irrespective of size, shape, or colour.
As we move forward, I envision a world where the intimate apparel industry continues to pivot. A world where it becomes less about external validation and more about internal celebration.
Remember, when you slip into that beautiful piece of intimate wear, it's not about the eyes that may or may not see it; it's about the heart that beats beneath it, the soul that wears it, and the stories and scars it covers.
So, to every person reading this, I urge you:
Next time you’re shopping for lingerie, think less about who might see it and more about how it feels against your skin, how it resonates with your spirit.
